In theory, there should be no reason that you should be unable to use an external GPS device that connects to your iPad via Bluetooth or WiFi - and this is often necessary where direct reception of GPS signals are screened from the iPad/iPhone. The external receiver is simply a BT/BTLE accessory.

But the device and the bluetooth link work perfectly. Back when i used a laptop for nav i used one of the simple USB "hocky puck" external GPS antennas (search for BU 353 - theyre everywhere) that sit on the dash. Also worked perfectly, much much faster than any Garmin or other GPS unit Ive used. For the last decade I have used an Android phone as my GPS device. I've never, ever, had GPS signal loss, even with the phone sitting in the cupholder at the console. I bought (and still have) a Garmin Glo, which is an external GPS antenna. I used it for several months but quickly realized it only provided a minuscule improvement in accuracy.
Had the same with Pioneer and Kenwood for way over 1k Euros, even with my external GPS antenna. Yes, most of the aftermarket radios are delivered with a "hockey puck"GPS antenna but you don´t need to place it on top of the dash. You also can mount it under the dash, just no metal needs to be on top. Nevertheless
