An e36 is probably not the best choice for drifting. With a 51F/49R weight distribution these cars were designed to maintain balance and control in the twisties. Cars like the Siivia make good drift cars becasue their weight distribution is actually closer to 60/40 bone stock, with a full tank of gas.

E36 is a great budget car and the 4cyl are less trouble than the 6 (no VANOS). They are not hard to work on. Down here there are plenty of used parts; not sure what it's like in A-squared though. There are tons of good DIY guides, with photos, on-line.
Good car to start in. Weld the diff. But keep an eye on the water pump and head gasket as heavy use will bugger them up. Make sure the back end around the rear subframe mounts aren't to heavily corroded or all the clutch kick and transfer will soon pull them out.
